We leave Pittsburgh around 1 pm. We have Babe paint The Babe. It was a leisurely drive because it was Wednesday ant the game in Atlanta was on Friday. We arrive in Atlanta at 3 am and stay with Coz’s and Lebeau’s Syracuse University friend, Lenny. We find out that Lebeau has left his luggage in Pittsburgh!
On Thursday we get a new muffler on The Babe. A hot and muggy day filled with swimming and bar hopping that night. On Friday we went early to the stadium and got free tickets and press passes. We got a free lunch at D.B.Kaplan’s where Lenny worked.
Arrive at the game, we were escorted on the field. We were able to roam about. Carm took pictures of Gaylord Perry signing autograpghs, along with John Montefusco. Carm got his picture taken with Tommie Aaron(Henry’s brother). While on the field a huge rainstorm hits so we all ducked for cover in the Braves dugout. So we are waiting out the delay with the likes of Chief Noc-A-Homa, Twinkie the Kid, Bobby Cox and Glenn Hubbard. Then an older coach walks by. We have no idea who it is until we see the name on the back of the uniform. It was Hall of Famer Luke Appling! This was our magic moment! Old aches and Pain!
After the rain stopped, we went back to our seats for the game. Undefeated Steve Carlton(8-0) started for Phillies. Dale Murphy threw out Pete Rose at 3rd base in the 6thinning. Rick Camp pitched the last 3 innings for the save. Carlton gave up 2 runs, both runs for his first loss.His ERA was lowered to 2.66 .
This topped Tiger Stadium as far as the amount of alcohol consumed. More bar hopping afterwards.
