The Great American Journey For Hemophilia - 1981

Wrigley Field

Chicago

June 9, 1981

Cubs 2, Giants 1

We leave Cincy at 11am. Arrive in the windy city at 5pm. We are staying with JD’s and Carm’s Syracuse friend, Chuck Williams. No game tonight, so we chill out for the evening.

The Cubs were expecting us for the afternoon(of course) clash vs the Giants. We got free tickets again with field access. We presented Steve Dillard with Hemophiliac Certificate.

There was a rain delay to start. Once it started it continued to rain throughout the contest. Sloppy conditions all game long. Giants manager and catcher Milt May protest to home plate umpire, Joe West, about the conditions. The game is finally suspended in the bottom of the 8th with the Cubs up 2-1.

Wednesday: game is resumed. Our tickets are still good for the completion of game plus we stayed for the regularly scheduled game. The Cubs hang on to win 2-1 before a paltry crowd of 4735.

The second game is unofficial for us but turns out to be a gut punch for us. We find out during the game that a judge has ruled against an injunction by the National Labor Relations Board(NLRB). That means the players will strike on Friday if no settlement is reached. Our euphoric state disappears.

Interesting side notes: Cubs win again 7-4. JD gets foul ball of the bat of Bill Buckner in 6th inning! We talk to Phil Ruzzuto during the game. The Yankees are in town to play the White Sox. That is where we are headed next. Dick Tidrow saves his second game of the day.
