Rocky Mountain SABR Chapter – Baseball Card Group

April 18, 2023

We are pleased to announce that the we are going to begin a RM SABR baseball card group and plan on holding the first meeting on April 18.

The idea behind a local baseball cards group has been simmering for at least a year and the RM SABR chapter is set to finally launch its very own. In 2023 we’ll gather with fellow collectors and card fans to talk about our collections, debate the best sets and cards and maybe even visit a card show or two.

To begin, we plan to hold meetings quarterly, beginning with our first meeting on April 18 at 5:00 p.m. at the DNVR bar at 2239 E. Colfax – corner of York on the north side of Colfax. At this organizational meeting we’ll introduce ourselves and discuss our favorite baseball card memories and explore options for what our group would like to talk about in the wide world of baseball cards and memorabilia. Free parking may be available on Gaylord and York going north, and pay parking on Colfax.

If you are interested in this group, email Brian Werner  (brianwerner281@gmail.com) or Greg Petty (gpetty1@gmail.com) and let us know whether or not you can attend our first meeting.

All people interested in baseball cards are welcome to our first couple of meetings.  But this group is likely to eventually become only for SABR members.

Future meetings will be determined by the wishes of our group and may include:

  • Meetings hosted by collectors themselves to “show off” their collections and discuss their favorite items and teams.
  • Guest speakers from the baseball card ranks, area store owners, auctioneers, and even the occasional baseball card historian.
  • Discussion about baseball card books – opportunities to chatter  about some of our favorite books related to the hobby
  • Trips to area card shows

Chapter members were treated to an exceptional presentation that was put together by Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at DU entitled THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL CARDS…ROCKY MOUNTAIN STYLE.

The presentation, made by Jason Schwartz, covered more than a century of Rocky Mountain baseball card history, highlighting the many evolutions and revolutions within the hobby, past and present. Jason centered his stories and examples around cards holding local relevance to the Rocky Mountain region while interspersing his narration with trivia challenges that test audience knowledge of baseball cards and local teams and players, current or otherwise.

Jason has been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) since 2019 and is co-chair of the organization’s Baseball Cards Research Committee. He has collected cards since 1978, has authored several dozen articles on baseball cards, and has made numerous presentations at the national and local chapter level. Jason has degrees in mathematics from the University of Oregon and the University of California, Berkeley, and was the Monterey County Toastmaster of the Year in 2000.
